Goa Medical College will now have 200 MBBS seats from this year
Goa Medical College (GMC) is a public medical college and hospital located in Goa, India. It is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia. The medical college is affiliated to the Goa University (GU), being its oldest unit.
State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase in MBBS seats to 200 at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for the 2024–2025 academic year.
Earlier, 150 places for the MBBS program at the largest government hospital in the coastal state, the GMCH, were approved.
Rane noted in a press release that the GMCH's decision to expand its MBBS program from 150 to 200 seats marked a significant turning point in the institution's history of offering high-quality medical education and healthcare services.
"We have received the Letter of Permission from the National Medical Commission, approving an increase in our MBBS seats to 200 for the academic year 2024-2025," he stated.
The minister stated that this development is a major step in increasing the state-run institution's capacity and enabling more students to achieve their goals of becoming qualified medical professionals.
Rane said that more seats in a number of postgraduate MD/MS courses have been approved.
MD (radiodiagnosis) now has seven seats, MS (general surgery) has fifteen, MS (obstetrics and gynaecology) has eight seats, MD (pharmacy) has four seats instead of six, and MD (paediatrics) has ten seats.
Rane emphasised that the expansion in seat capacity is indicative of the government's dedication to promoting medical quality and meeting the escalating healthcare demands in the area and beyond.
He continued, "The Goa Medical College is committed to educating the next generation of medical professionals while offering state-of-the-art medical care."
