IIT Madras, French University collaborate for Bio-manufacturing course

IIT Madras and French University collaborate to offer a Bio-manufacturing course. The course will commence from December 2, 2024.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is collaborating with the University of Tours, France. It is to offer a course on ‘sustainable Bio-Manufacturing of high -value Phytochemical’. The course is being offered via the Global Initiaves of Academic Networks’(GIAN) programme in order to boost the collaboration with international universities.

The course aligns with the vision of the Indian’s Government, the policy of BioE3. Its aim is to promote and facilitate manufacturing of Bio-products on large scale for the purpose of Sustainable Development with High-Performance Biomanufacturing.

The course works with the sustainable manufacturing of high-value plant-derived natural products using plant and microbial bio-factories. It can also conserve nature while fulfilling the increasing market demand for phytochemicals for several commercial applications.

The course can be availed by even those outside of IIT Madras. To the researchers, industry professionals, students of BTech, MTech, MSc, PhD in plan biotechnology/bioprocess Engineering/biotechnology and faculty from recognised institutions can apply. The Applicants are required to have a basic knowledge of plant cell and microbial technology and fermentation.

Professor Smita Srivastava, who is also the Faculty-in-Charge for IIT Madras Bioincubator, mentioned , “Such short-courses can be extremely useful to create awareness and interest among the budding researchers, industry professionals and entrepreneurs to develop such sustainable technologies for huge socio-economical impact both nationally and internationally”.

Moreover, Professor Nathalie Giglioli-Guivarc’h, Director, of Biomolecules and Plant Biotechnologies Laboratory, University of Tours, France, stated, “The COVID pandemic in 2020 has, among other things, highlighted the need for States such as those in Asia and Europe to secure production of certain vital medicines. Thus, the development of technologies for production of active ingredients of plant origin, such as anticancer drugs, as alternatives to growing plants in fields, and as part of a sustainable development approach, is becoming one of the major challenges of the coming decade.”
