Bangalore University, nestled in the vibrant Garden City of Bangalore, often hailed as the "I.T. Capital of India," embarked on its educational journey in July 1964. It emerged as an independent institution, branching out from the University of Mysore, with a mission to encompass the institutes of higher learning located within Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur districts. The foundations of the university were laid upon the distinguished Central College (CC) and the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), which served as its initial nucleus. A significant milestone in Bangalore University's history was the introduction of Honours Courses in 1965-66. These three-year Honours programs, spanning subjects such as Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology, quickly gained recognition and drew bright minds. The Honours graduates were given priority admission to Post Graduate Courses, thus furthering their academic pursuits. Since its inception, Bangalore University has steadily expanded, both in scale and strength, affiliating numerous colleges and establishing Post Graduate Centers, thus offering a rich diversity of academic programs. In 1973, the university shifted its operations to the sprawling 1100-acre 'Jnana Bharathi' (JB) campus, housing various administrative offices, postgraduate departments, directorates, centers of higher learning, and support services. This campus also accommodates notable institutions such as the University Law College and the College of Physical Education. Committed to holistic education, Bangalore University has established centers like Gandhi Bhavan, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Study and Research Centre, and the Centre for Study on Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy. With 52 years of fruitful existence, Bangalore University has evolved into one of Asia's largest universities. Initially conceived as a federal university, it eventually took on an affiliating role. The university has been recognized and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), receiving a 'Five Star' rating in 2002 and subsequent 'A' Grade accreditation in 2008 and 2016. On the global stage, Bangalore University has garnered recognition, ranking 151st among BRICS nations by QS University Ranking in 2016. It also secured prominent positions in various national rankings, affirming its academic prowess and commitment to excellence. Academically, the university is structured into six faculties, including Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law, and Engineering. It boasts 48 Post Graduate Departments, affiliated colleges, and several centers and directorates devoted to higher learning and research. Currently, the university offers 50 Post Graduate Courses, Employment Oriented Diploma and Certificate Courses, and innovative Five-Year Integrated Courses in Biological Sciences.
